Story

At 10:50pm on the 8th May 2018, one of my favourite people on earth wrote this via Twitter:

"Be so good to everyone you love. It’s not a given. I’m so annoyed that it’s not. I didn’t live by that standard and it kills me. Please, hug your loved ones."

19 minutes later, at 11:09pm, he wrote the following:

"I'm away now. Thanks."

Two days later, his body was found.

I can't describe how much Scott meant to me. And I know I'm not the only one who, whenever you saw him, would feel like you're in the presence of an old friend. I can't count the amount of times I've seen him perform, whether it be with Frightened Rabbit, as Owl John or most recently with Master System. I also can't even remember the amount of times I've been fortunate enough to chat to him, to share a drink with him - trying and failing to keep my cool at just how in awe of him I was. He was so funny, kind & genuine.

Just two weeks ago, we were getting a photo together at The Deaf Institute, both joking that the kind stranger taking the picture needed to move back further, as we both declared we had massive faces and could do with a more flattering angle. I remember a time before this, having a drink in Big Hands, all bunched together at the rammed bar, he knocked my drink out of my hand by accident, immediately apologetic and embarrassed, he insisted on buying me another and asked what I was having. I insisted it was okay, but he told me not to be stupid and got Grant to buy me one anyway. I laugh and wince at the time he walked in to Gorilla, not a foot away from me and I gasped and covered my mouth with my hand - and the time I brought that up with him some years later. I realise these are fairly mundane musings, but they are memories that are so special to me. How many people can truly say they've met their heroes?

I'm running for Mind, because I know they do such good things in the pursuit of helping people overcome their issues with mental health. I know this, because I've used their services before and infact signed up to use them again just two days ago. I've thought more times than I care to admit about taking my own life, about the relief it would bring, but I'm still here and I hope to be for a long time to come. I wish Scott still was, and I'm raising this money, so that more people I love will never have to feel that death is the only way out of what they are going through.

"While I'm alive, I'll make tiny changes to Earth".
