Story

HELP US REVOLUTIONISE STROKE CARE IN MALAWI BY SUPPORTING MALAWI STROKE SERVICES...

A stroke is caused by a blocked blood vessel cutting off blood supply to part of the brain, or by bleeding in and around the brain. The effects can be devastating, resulting in severe disability or death. In developing countries like Malawi, stroke is the third leading cause of death and most commonly occurs when people are in their 40s or 50s, like Christabel, and providing for their families.

Currently, there is a global health crisis in stroke with the number of victims of strokes across the world increasing. This is disproportionally true in countries like Malawi.

We are a partnership between University College London and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Blantyre and have set up the first ever stroke unit in Malawi. As well as the unit, we are providing a complete stroke service including expert medical, nursing and therapy care from the point at which the patient enters the hospital, until after they are back at home. This is the first such service in that part of southern Africa, and we hope will serve as a model service for the region.
