Story

Children are the future of our world

Grazie

-------------------------------------

In September with 14 AAM colleagues i'll be in Peru for 1 volunteering week. The week will be split between Lima and Cusco. In Lima the activities include: classroom support (English, Maths), Sports/Dance/Arts workshops and career discussions. In Cusco, activities to include: attending evening schools for vulnerable girls, visiting communities, and attending a community workshop with child domestic workers.

ChildHope was established in 1989 and grew out of the recognition of the huge and growing but neglected problem of children living and working on the streets of Africa, Asia and South America, Over the last twenty years, the charity has been working to develop long lasting solutions aimed at tackling the root causes of the poverty and the injustice faced by children around the world.

Aberdeen’s support has focused on the regions immediately surrounding Lima, where despite rapid economic development within the city, around a third of children live on less than $2 a day. Many of these children are subject to violence in schools, often chastised by teachers using sticks, belts or ropes. This, combined with pressures to forgo education for poorly paid work (nationally 26% of children miss school for employment), is causing large numbers to withdraw from schooling. Our project aims to create safer school environments in eight schools. It has identified those children within the schools that are most at risk of educational underachievement and support them with additional supportive educational sessions. Local Parent Associations will also be trained to hold schools and teachers to account for the safety of their children and to report cases of violence.
