Hello everyone!  

For those of you that don't know, we have never taken part in an organised run aside from a handful of 5km Park Runs, so the Royal Parks half marathon is a MASSIVE challenge for the two of us to support the brilliant cause that is Independent Age.  

Independent Age is an incredible charity that supports older people with the the mission of ensuring that, as we grow older, we all have the opportunity to live well with dignity choice and purpose. 

Having watched our grandparents grow older, we know how important these things are.  Independent Age focuses on the critical areas of health and care, poverty and loneliness. Especially over the last year, loneliness has sadly become a big part of older people's lives as they haven't been able to have the usual visits and interactions.  

The picture above is of the two of us with Claire's Grandpa.  It was taken at the start of September, which was the first time we had been able to see him for almost two years because of the pandemic.  We have been lucky enough to have had lots of phone calls whilst we haven't been able to visit, but so many older people don't even have a friendly voice at the end of the phone.  So, for us, one of the most amazing and important aspects of Independent Age's work is their connection services, which links lonely older people with volunteers who make regular phone calls or visits to help them feel more connected and to give them something to look forward to.

Independent Age also challenges ageism by providing information and advice to empower older people to make confident choices about the things that matter in their lives and also driving change through policy - influencing public debate on older people’s issues.
