Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page, fundraising to make a difference to those living with Epilepsy.

WOW the challenge is complete. The temperature was never below 100 degrees !!. The canyon is an amazing place -- rugged and yet welcoming and  spiritual . The upper canyon is dry and the walls have cacti cling ons only . However once  you get to the bottom the plants are lush alongside the colorado river . There are many thunderous waterfills and many crystal clear turqoise pools . The tiny village called supai is the home to 400 havasupai indians .

We had a memorial service for Max at the top of Mooney Falls .This is a special place for the Havasupai people and signifys a transition point. We remembered that it was because of Max that we were there. His memory had given us the purpose to come to this place and to raise money that will hopefully help other  young people with epilepy . It would be especially great if the mystery behind Sudden Unexplained Death in EPilepsy(SUDEP) could be unraffled to prevent young lives being taken away so suddenly. You cannot appeciate this a amazing  place from the rim nor from a helicopter . The climate is harsh and sapping but it was certainly worth the challenge

Max was a patient of mine . At the surgery he would head straight to the toys like any other little boy. At other times unfortunately he would have prolonged seizures especially if he had a cold or an ear infection. This is a local charity in memory of a special little boy. The money raised will hopefully help fund research that will help children and their families all over the world.

I am sometimes asked what is the most difficult part of your job . Easy question to answer . Talking to a greiving parent. Gail - Max's Mum has energised the local community to take part in a wide range of fund raising events. I am proud to be part of that effort as it is the very community that I serve. Community spirit is often talked about by politicians but to see it in action is really nice .

I also have a child with epilepsy. I remember how helpless i felt when the seizures started. I also remember the impact it had on Alice's daily life .

As a doctor and as a parent I often reflect on how little is known about epilepsy and yet it affects so many people . I hope TeamMax can help the scientists answer some of the unknowns.
