Matt and Michaela: Back on Track (NFA)

Back on Track · 24 February 2016
Following an injury sustained on active duty whilst serving with the Grenadier Guards, Matt was medically discharged from the army in 1993. His condition worsened and the constant pain increasingly limited opportunities. By 2009 the loss in mobility, had negated an active life style and eroded all our shared interests. Matt lost his career, identity, self esteem and became increasingly dependent.
Whilst waiting for a below knee amputation the "momentum brace" was proposed as an alternative. Although not available via the NHS he was fortunate to obtain funding through the Colonel's Fund Grenadier Guards. With continuing support from his casualty officer Matt is now working hard to return to a fitness that enables him to live, work and contribute once more.
During the 20 years since injury the impact on roles, relationships and expectations had severely dented our resolve. Although determined to survive, side by side through everything, we were increasingly isolated and exhausted. The NFA embraced us both; introducing us to challenging activities and comradeship opportunities that have enabled us both to bounce back.
