Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure, your money goes directly to Myeloma UK and your details are safe with JustGiving.

Around 360,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in the UK each year, this number is steadily rising and there are currently 2.5 million people living with cancer in the UK today. Survival and cure rates are higher than they have ever been thanks to fantastic treatments and testing facilities, but there are still cancers that we cannot cure. One of these is Myeloma and whilst the symptoms are treatable, it is not curable, meaning patients will go through periods of remission after treatment but will eventually come back and require further treatment.

Over the last two years Myeloma has affected both close family and friends. In 2016 my father was diagnosed with Myeloma. Dad has always been a hard working, never ill, super hero who has blazed the trail of how to be a man and a father, so for him to be ill was totally alien to me. He is now, gladly, in better health after a long and gruelling treatment but throughout the whole thing there was very little I could do, beyond offer support to him and my family as best I could. Now I have an opportunity to try and help others in the future.

Whilst I know the chances of a cure are a far off dream, better treatment through advanced research is a very real possibility. Every Pound you donate gets us closer to that possibility, meaning that one day somebody you know or love can receive cutting edge treatment, making either their journey easier or their time between treatments longer.

So that's the why, now for the what; what am I going to do that's insane enough to justify some of your hard earned money?

Europe's Toughest Mudder is an 12 hour multi-lap obstacle course race, with water, mud, ice and 10,000V of electricity thrown in to make it a bit more interesting. The race starts at 8pm on the 18th of May 2019 and finishes at 8am on the 19th, each lap is 5 miles long with multiple and varying obstacles. My aim is to complete a minimum of 5 laps and 35miles in 12 hours!

This is going to be the hardest I've ever pushed myself; both physically and mentally, the furthest and longest I have ever run and the latest I have been up for years! The training has already began and I have eight events booked for 2018, the hardest being a 13mile Spartan Beast in the autumn. My aim of 35miles for Europe's Toughest Mudder will be a real challenge.

If you know me then you know I don't really do charity and I don't like asking for money, but I do love my family and doing ridiculous things which make for a good story. So dig deep, your donations will keep pushing me on when I should be asleep, when I am cold, wet, hungry and tired and wanting to give up.

Thank you for taking the time to read my ramblings, now share your money and maybe change a life.

Matt
