Story
As many of you know, I have been suffering from Anorexia Nervosa for the past year and have previously done some fundraising for BEAT, the UK's leading charity for eating disorders. My first fundraising event received a staggering amount of money which has made me even more passionate about tackling the stigma behind mental illness. I'm progressing towards recovery and ready to take on my next challenge.
I will be doing a sponsored skydive (yikes!!!) on the 6th October 2018. I have three months to raise as much money as possible to such a great cause that is very close to my heart. BEAT have helped me so much in the past, and continue to do so, so I know from experience the positive changes they can make to people's lives. I have often used their helplines when I've needed urgent support and received some valuable guidance. I was lucky with undergoing treatment quickly but sadly, this is not the case for everyone. I want to do all I can to spread awareness, support other sufferers and raise money but, I need your help!
Here are a few stats on the seriousness of eating disorders,
- On average, 149 weeks pass before those experiencing eating disorder symptoms seek help. That’s almost three years, 37 months or 1,043 days.
- Eating disorders can cause serious harm and may be fatal – anorexia has the highest mortality rate of all psychological illnesses. Most fatalities are down to sufferers not receiving treatment quick enough.
- Over 1.6 million people are suffering from diagnosed or undiagnosed eating disorders throughout the UK. Many more remain undiagnosed and at risk, partly due to the fear of reaching out for help.
The money raised goes towards the charity, BEAT. Together we can,
- provide vital helplines,
- online support groups and message boards,
- training for professionals,
- help campaign for better treatment and understanding.
