Story

Thank you for visiting our Just Giving page which has been set up to raise funds for Clydeside Action on Asbestos through a group of family members taking part in the Edinburgh Marathon Festival and in honour of Willie Vidler.

Willie, an electrician, was a victim of the dreaded Asbestos related disease mesothelioma which he contracted while working on the construction of Cockenzie Power Station in the 60’s.

At that time although there was knowledge of the dangers of asbestos exposure employers did nothing to warn their workers of the Hazards or provide personal protective clothing.
The microscopic silicate fibres are indestructible and can enter the body by inhalation or through the pores, once there they can accumulate in the lining of the lungs causing scarring and inflammation which can affect breathing and lead to serious health problems.

Asbestosis symptoms can range from mild to severe, and usually don't appear until many years after exposure.

At Willies funeral in November 2017, his children and grandchildren pledged to help other victims and raise awareness around the dangers of asbestos.

As Willie lived in East Lothian and the route of the Edinburgh Marathon passes the former site of Cockenzie Power Station it seemed apt that various members of his family should challenge themselves by participating in this event which takes place on 27th May 2018. Some will be running the full marathon, some the half marathon and others taking part as a team in the relay event. At the moment it looks like 15-20 family/extended family members will be running.

Your support would be very much appreciated both in donations and in raising awareness of Mesothelioma.

Many thanks for visiting our page.
