Kids in Chelsea

Charity evening with an all star cast

Raised more than £30,000

3rd October 2013, London

Kids in Chelsea, a unique fundraising event hosted by Hugo Taylor and Rosie Fortescue, last night raised more than £30,000 for special needs and underprivileged children in Chelsea.

With the help of local businesses including Tom Aikens, residents, Chelsea Pensioners and firefighters, they beat the target of £20,000. The evening included an auction hosted by Mr Speaker, John Bercow and entertainment included performances from Eemia, Eric Whitacre and the Christ Church Primary School Choir. Several of Hugo's friends turned up to show their support including Spencer Matthews and Josh Coombes.

Background:  It is easy to forget that there are many children in Chelsea who come from difficult home circumstances.  Christ Church Primary School is a state funded primary school with an amazing OFSTED school rating, whilst also having one of the highest proportions of special needs and underprivileged children in the country. Located in the heart of Chelsea, it is an important and special community school that needs help because it cannot access the funding of the larger state schools. The money raised from this community event, where Tom Aikens gave an inspiring speech on the importance of good food in schools, will help raise funds for school food and technology.  Every pound raised from ticket sales and the charity auction (hosted by Mr Speaker Rt Hon John Bercow), will make a huge difference to the school and the life of every child there.  A unique event for those made in Chelsea, who live in Chelsea, work in Chelsea or even go to school in Chelsea.  After all, charity begins at home.

Commenting on hosting the event, Hugo Taylor says: “This is a great cause! I am so happy to be helping children from inside the Borough that has provided me with so much! I owe a lot to Chelsea, so it’s great to fund raise for this school which provides a first class education to a wide variety of children”.

Avis Hawkins, head teacher, Christ Church Primary School adds: "This was an amazing evening of celebration and fundraising for our school. The whole community came together to help raise funds for our children. The monies raised will be used to pay for developing the healthy eating curriculum , cooking sessions, gardening, trips to the farm we are linked with and improving our school meals offer for our children. All these things we could never afford on our constrained school budget".

Kids in Chelsea was founded by Chelsea housewife, Michelle van Tulder. She said:"It was amazing to see all the support from the whole Chelsea community, from stars to dignitaries - fire fighters to Chelsea Pensioners, come out in force to support a very special group of children in our borough, Christ Church Primary School.  With the support of the great and good of Chelsea we blew away our fundraising target, raising more than £30,000.  The crowd were massively enthusiastic in support of the event and cries of "AGAIN - next year!" echoed at St Luke's Church last night.
