Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Roberta's family and friends took part in the Marie Curie Twilight Walk 2020 in her memory last month and were overjoyed with the response from those who supported at the walk and financially in memory of their mum and sister Roberta Waterworth. Roberta was a diminutive figure who spoke little about her time as a Marie Curie nurse. She definitely was a person who's actions spoke loudest for her. This really is synonymous with those who wear the Marie Curie uniform  The family were delighted and immensely proud when Marie Curie Regional Manager - Paula Heneghan attended the funeral service and spoke so wamly and respectfully about the courage and selflessness of Roberta and recounted anecdotes of how she attended to her patients throughout the challenging period of the troubles, many times without much consideration for her own safety, providing care to others who she believed were in greater need.

Prior to her time at Marie Curie, Roberta also offered herself as a first responder and, like many who offer themselves to this service, act without the need for reward, knowing that giving the person everything of temself in that moment is the greatest reward they could receive. It is then left to others to tell the stories of good deeds that provide such encouragement to us all to try and look after each other. Paul reflects on times when Roberta returned home, her uniform blood stained, her mind filled with what she had seen. Yet it would not be until years later that she would discuss the events and provide insight to the depth of his sister. Depth that would be much needed in her own life.

Roberta, a devoted mother,  suffered much terrible pain and tragedy. Her daughter died suddenly at 23 and her son suffered an acquired brain injury following an horrendous accident 13 years ago, which robbed him of the opportunity to live a normal independent life and Roberta's former husband Noel died suddenly in 2011. Her brother Paul Herbert was ever present throughout her life, providing much love and support and his heartfelt desire is to ensure his nephew can live as full a life as possible.

I have been inspired by Roberta's selflessnesss and her desire to do what needed to be done, and whilst this pales in significance to the work of Marie Curie, I plan to trek the 4 highest peaks in each province of Ireland: Ulster - Slieve Donard (850mtrs), Munster - Carrauntoohill (1038 mtrs), Leinster - Lugnaquilla (925 mtrs) and Connaught - Mweelrea (814 mtrs) a combined ascent of around 3627 mtrs (or 2.2 miles) and I am grateful for all the support and donations. These are difficult times we are living in and charities are suffering as a direct result of Covid-19 and the loss of Marie Curie and the care they provide would be huge.

All donations will be sent directly to Marie Curie.
