Story

Hi

Thank you for visiting my fundraising webpage. My name is Michael Swain and i was injured in Helmand Province, Afghanistan in 2009 whilst serving for 3rd Battalion, The Rifles Regiment. As a result of an improvised Explosive Device (IED) i lost both legs above the knee and was first British Military amputee to be fitted with Osseointegration Prosthetic limbs.

During my rehabilitation i trued many sports, however in 2017 i began to take more of an interest in hand cycling which culminated in me taking part in a 3051 mile Race Across America (RAAM)  cycling race as part of an 8-man wounded veterans team. Following on from my experiences of RAAM, i have been keen to find a new challenge to push the boundaries of what is possible on a hand bike but also to raise funds for those service charities which make a tangible difference to wounded service personnel.

I now plan to set a new  hand cycling world record by completing 850 miles from John O'Groats to Lands end (JOGLE) in under 4 days . This involves me covering at least 212 miles days whilst climbing over 32,000 feet over the duration of the route! This will new an extreme challenge which will involve long days on the bike and very little sleep. I also have a solid support team behind me from 65 Degrees North to help get the job done.

My main reason for doing this challenge is to raise money for 65 Degrees North and the British Limbless Ex-Serviceman Association (BLESMA). Both of these incredible organisations have made a huge difference to me and many of me fellow wounded comrades helping us to crack on and live active, meaningful and fulfilled lives.

Any Donations which you could make would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Michael
