Chernobyl Challenge 2007, 20 March 2007
We support children suffering from cancer to improve their life chances

Story

The Chernobyl nuclear accident surely ranks as one of humanity's all time cock-ups. A huge area in the former Soviet states of Ukraine and Belarus was exposed to an horrific dose of radiation.

Many people suffered and died back in 1986 and many people have done so since. The particular tragedy of the Chernobyl accident is that the children of Belarus, born after the accident, are suffering from its terrible after-effects.

On 24th August I am joining 9 other motorcyclists to ride out to Chernobyl in the Ukraine. The round trip is about 3,500 miles, will take 15 days and will include travelling through Holland, Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland. The point of the trip is to raise money for The Chernobyl Children’s Project (UK) which is working in Belarus caring for these children. Children who are now paying dearly for the worlds largest and longest lasting ecological disaster.

We will also spend a day visiting the site of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and the nearby abandoned town of Prypiat.

The riders are covering all of their expenses. After all, this ride is an exercise in purposeful tourism for us. Unlike other sponsored activities, where a proportion covers the cost of the activity, none of the money raised as sponsorship goes anywhere other than to The Chernobyl Children's Project (UK).

Please take a look at our website, which has a lot more details about the whole trip and (more particularly) the Chernobyl accident and The Chernobyl Children's Project (UK).

Up the top of the page I have a target of £1,000. That's there because I can't put "as much money as possible" in the little box. The aim of all the riders is to raise at least £1,000 but we'd all like to exceed that, so please, please find a few quid to help The Chernobyl Children's Project (UK) the children living under the shadow of Chernobyl. Even the smallest amount will help - a few quid here and there all adds up to a better life for these children.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Chernobyl Children's Project (UK) will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please sponsor me now!

Many thanks for reading this and hopefully for your support.
