We work to prevent breast cancer to stop women, and men, being diagnosed.

Story

On the 28th of January 2020 after attending the breast screening clinic with a suspected cyst, my 29 year old sister Gillian was diagnosed with Grade 3 Ductal Carcinoma.

It was stage 2 breast cancer which meant the cancer cells had spread into her lymph nodes. The plan for Gillian after this laid out by her surgeon and oncologist was 6 cycles of chemotherapy, followed by surgery and then radiotherapy.

Gillian’s chemotherapy started on the 18th February 2020 and after 2 cycles was brought to a halt due COVID-19 and the associated risks. Shortly after finding out that her treatment would no longer continue, she was given 24 hours notice that she would be receiving her surgery early. On the 31st March 2020 Gillian underwent a left mastectomy and had 23 lymph nodes removed.

After healing from her surgery, her oncologist decided to continue her chemotherapy, finishing up the last 4 cycles concluding on the 8th July 2020. The final stage of her treatment plan was 15 sessions of radiotherapy, which concluded on the 19th August 2020.

Gillian was 29 (now 30 🥳) with a 3 year old, and a 4 month old baby with no family history of any cancers and this was a massive shock to the entire family. Thus, an important reminder to SELF EXAMINE.

Jordan and I will be doing 1 million steps between us in the month of September to raise money for Breast Cancer UK. This doesn’t sound like much to some, but it’s a lot for two people who are currently working from home 😂 any money donated is a HUGE help and we would be so grateful.

Breast Cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. Gillian’s story is testament that it can happen to anyone. Please remember to self examine and visit your GP if you notice any changes in your breasts. If you are unsure how to examine, below is a link with a great guide!!

Thank you so much for reading Gillian’s story.
