 *Wednesday 13th October. DID IT! Set off from Portloe later than planned at 11.00am after getting caught up in the Truro Traffic Tailbacks. The wind has dropped but is still an unfavorable Easterly, and choppy seas fill us with concerns about rounding the Dodman. Safely round the point  Andy calls Laurence Reed from from the kayak click-here (from 1hr 50mins). Made it to Porthpean at 5.30pm and 16miles "yippy ki yaK " :) It's been hard work but we've enjoyed it.

*Saturday 2nd October. STUCK AT PORTLOE (with dry wetsuits). Force 4-5 SE winds and a ground swell bring confused seas and white water in the cove. We will try again another day, very soon.

 *Friday 1st October - WE MADE PORTLOE (SOMEHOW) :) Started from Truro at 10.30am, arrived at 6.30pm. Half way now (22miles logged on Ross's GPS). Recovering very nicely in Treverbyn House B&B, Veryan, in the good hands of Alison & Mike Rawling. Wetsuits are drying in the kitchen.

Hello, I’m Andy Monteith, one third of, and, owner of Monteith Fencing. Ross Burrow and Paul Condon make up the other two thirds of the staff. The three of us including Matt Harradine, (backup paddler and 'man ashore & support driver') are raising money for Children’s Hospice South West by attempting to kayak from Truro to Porthpean near St Austell during two days in October – that’s a distance of 38 miles down the river and around the coast. We’re reckoning on reaching Portloe (22 miles) and crashing out for the night before completing the voyage the next day.

 

We will be using two Hobie kayaks (a single seater and a tandem), each with a pedal drive for most of the way, adopting conventional kayak paddles from time to time to give our legs a rest. If we are really lucky and the wind is right we will put a small sail up on each boat (Courtesy of Cornwall Canoes, St Columb) to give us an encouraging gentle push.

 

The start date of the event is all dependant on the weather and sea conditions so we will be setting ourselves a ‘weather window'; any Friday in the month of October, with Friday 1st October as the first opportunity.

 

 We are planning to launch from the quay near Penrose Outdoor, Truro, who have kindly offered us parking for the duration of the trip. 

 

 Our journey will finish at Porthpean. Technically and literally our recovery site, it is also the location of Children’s Hospice South West third hospice Little Harbour, due to open in 2011.

 

Last year Monteith Fencing made a donation of £1000 to the Precious Lives Appeal, and now we are asking you, our suppliers and customers and all of our friends and family to dig deep and show your support (or rolling support) for Children’s Hospice South West and Little Harbour where care and support and compassion will be on tap for life-limited children and their families. Please be a part of making that support possible and give generously if you are able, but anything however small will help, thank you.

 ABOUT CHILDREN'S HOSPICE SOUTH WEST

 

At Children’s Hospice South West we help and support children and their families who are living with life-limiting conditions. We are the only organisation in the South West to provide vital hospice care to these families, and are here for families day and night throughout the year.

 

 There are over 1000 children who could benefit from our care, yet we are only able to provide care for up to 400 families. Of these, some come to us for palliative care, some for emergency care and many for planned respite and a rare opportunity for a break.

 

But there’s more to it than that. We provide a loving and caring place for every member of every family who stays with us; a sanctuary for mums and dads, brothers and sisters. A place where everyone can begin to forget their worries for a while, be a family again and find expert help and support in facing an uncertain future.

 

Children’s Hospice South West has two purpose-built hospices in the South West. Little Bridge House in North Devon and Charlton Farm in North Somerset. A third special home from home for life-limited children in Cornwall and Plymouth, is due to open in 2011 called Little Harbour.
