Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Stickler Syndrome affects three generations of my family. It is a relatively rare condition.  Stickler Syndrome UK provides information and support to professionals, newly diagnosed people and anyone who would like more knowledge of the syndrome.
In April 2017 I met my daughter at the finish line of the London Marathon. She was exhausted but elated and was clutching her medal having achieved a long held dream of completing the famous marathon course.
Like 1000s of others I went home and entered the ballot for a place in the 2018 event.
Fast forward 6 months and I got my ‘sorry you haven’t got a place’ magazine and resigned myself to my fate of having to watch the spectacle on tv next year. In truth a little bit of me was relieved. I’m 57. I have arthritis. I probably wouldn’t be able to complete it even if I did get a place.
Later that day I had a message from my daughter. I could apply for a ‘golden bond’ place and run for Stickler Syndrome UK
I was tempted. Should I go for it? I’ve taken part in the London Marathon before. Just once. 12 years ago in 2006. It remains one of the best experiences of my life. However, I no longer run, I’m currently having physio for hip and knee problems and I’m 57! I would also need to raise a substantial amount of money in sponsorship. BUT it would be for a cause so close to my heart. I guess I can walk the course if I can’t run it. What an opportunity.
So I applied. I got a place. That’s it. I am going to attempt to complete the London Marathon 2018.
I’m truly unsure if I can do this but if I can then I will. I’ll do whatever it takes. I might just get another finishers medal 12 years after my last one. How amazing would that be?!
