Story
Last Friday a catastrophic earthquake and tsunami hit Central Sulawesi. The devastation in Indonesia is immense, with reports of more than 1,200 casualties. This figure is set to rise as the missing are accounted for and the situation develops.
Unicef are on the frontlines of the relief effort, working alongside the Indonesian government and agencies to provide technical assistance and mobilise supplies. More than 48,000 people have been displaced, and over 1.5 million people affected by the disaster.
Unicef is particularly concerned for the safety and wellbeing of children who have lost their homes, become separated from their families and are sleeping rough. Children in Indonesia are already vulnerable as only 33 per cent of children under five are registered citizens.
The immediate needs of children include: evacuating the injured as well as providing medical services, food and emergency shelter.
