We enable the creation of marine reserves to reverse the crisis in our oceans

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Having spent most of my working life at sea, and having had the privilege over those years to enjoy the beauty, vastness and diversity of our oceans, I am taking the opportunity this summer to make my own tiny contribution towards helping to preserve this crucial part of our environment.

Through increasing CO2 emissions and global warming, Marine pollution , Over fishing and poor management of marine resources our oceans and the life they contain are coming under an increasingly critical threat from mankind's actions. More action is needed to halt the damage and bring the impending crisis into the public's conscious.

The Sea covers over 70% of globes surface and represents 95% of all the space available for life on Earth. Healthy oceans are essential for our future and for the future of our planet.

I really believe it's time for us to start taking more care and this is why I’m doing my own tiny bit by attempting to raise some funds, along with some other like-minded enthusiasts, to pedal my way from London to Monaco in September.

The challenge involves 10 days of cycling averaging 150Km per day with up to 3,500M of climbing per day. It’s a genuine challenge for even the most experienced cyclist and certainly at this stage its looking quite daunting! https://www.london-monaco.cc/

The proceeds from the fundraising go to Blue Marine Foundation http://www.bluemarinefoundation.com/

Blue Marine exists to combat over fishing and the destruction of biodiversity through the creation of large scale marine reserves and promotion of sustainable fishing.

100% of funds raised from this event will go towards four specific projects that will contribute significantly to ocean protection:

Ascension Island is located in the South Atlantic Ocean and is
one of the UK’s 14 overseas territories, which contain over 94% of Britain’s biodiversity. As part of the GB Oceans Coalition, BLUE secured the closure of over half of Ascension’s waters to fishing and has since brought about many benefits to the islanders. BLUE aims to protect 100% of these pristine waters and the amazing marine wild life that inhabit them.

The Aeolian Islands are a beautiful group of islands situated
north of Sicily. Their extraordinary marine environment has been subjected to over-fishing, habitat destruction and tourism for many years. BLUE, in partnership with the Aeolian Island Preservation Fund has persuaded the Minister of Environment, Land and Sea to start the process towards designation of what may will become the largest and most effective marine protected area (MPA) in Italy. This year, BLUE is carrying out research and engaging with the local community to ensure that the impending MPA not only restores the marine environment but also promotes livelihoods of the Aeolian Islanders.

BLUE aims to restore the once thriving native oyster to the Solent. Oysters act as filter feeders, cleaning the water and removing pollutants contributing to the overall health of the oceans. BLUE has made good progress, working alongside the University of Portsmouth and MDL
Marinas to suspend thousands of oysters in cages in marinas across the south coast. This year, BLUE aims to add a million oysters to wild sites.

The Marine Plastic Project, Beyond Plastic Med is an initiative
to confront the scale of plastic pollution and its impact on the Mediterranean. BeMed is working with eleven micro-initiatives in Greece, Italy, Turkey, Cyprus, Albania, Lebanon, Tunisia and Montenegro to raise awareness and action to combat plastic pollution on the coastline and in the sea.
