Story
11 years a go I went to Colombia for the first time and I'll never forget what I saw that day in 2010. I was travelling up a river in a boat in a remote part of the north part of the country near Monteria.
To me it felt like we were going through the Amazon rain forest, though it wasn't.
The river gets thinner and thinner, meandering more and more, untill we reach a small wood shack.
Outside the shack is a group of children. You could see they were very poor, they had no material possessions. But you could see that they were happy. They were playing and making the most of life.
Seeing the way that the children were happy and optimistic even in that difficult situation changed everything for me.
It flipped a switch inside me.
It made me realise that I had no reason not to be happy myself, not to be making the most of every opportunity.
That realisation while simple changed my life forever.
I never took anything for granted again and always remember those smiles whenever things get tough.
Now, I want to give back and help children in Colombia who now need our help more than ever.
I'm running this half marathon for them, who now have been especially badly impacted by COVID 19.
