Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am embarking on another adventure in March 2013!

This time, I am attempting to cross the Gibson Desert in Western Australia, from Perth through to Alice Springs, in the Northern Territory, then down to South Australia, follow the southern coast line through the Nullarbor Plain and back to Perth. I will be swapping the pedalo for two wheels.

The route I have planned is approximately 5,000 miles, which will take between 5 to 6 weeks to complete and will be travelling solo and without any support during this period.

I am shipping my own motorcycle out, which will take 40 days to arrive; I will then fly out to meet it in Perth.

The route will be mainly off road, re-joining known routes and settlements to refuel and restock. I will be sleeping in a mosquito net under the stars most evenings, but as anyone who has done any desert travelling will know, it can get very cold, and so a small tent and a sleeping bag will be at hand if ever required.

My main concerns are the long distances between fuel and water supplies, kangaroos (which tend to hop out in front of you unexpectedly) and other well-known dangerous indigenous animals such as poisonous snakes.  Night temperatures in the Australian Outback desert often drop below freezing point and the day temperatures can be extreme... There is also the chance of a breakdown (machine or man) in a very remote and inhospitable area.

Although the whole trip will be fully funded by me, I would like to use this opportunity to raise awareness on a very special local charity: the Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare - SESAW (Registered Charity No. 1124029). This local sanctuary, based in Leavenheath, Colchester, is helping to relocate and bring back to health, hundreds of small animals that have been either abandoned by their owners or victims of road accidents.  SESAW are in continuous need of volunteers and funds, so whether you have spare time to help or are able to donate some of your hard earned money, even animal food or bedding, all your help will be extremely appreciated. Check SESAW website for further details. www.sesaw.co.uk
