Starting on 20th May 2019, Malcolm (Omada’s trusty office dog) and I will be setting off on paw/foot from Buckfastleigh in Devon, to circumnavigate Dartmoor, over the course of approximately one week. In so doing, we’ll cover a distance of approximately 100 miles, and likely more given my map reading skills.
Many of you will know that for nearly 10 years I have endured a neuropathy resulting in chronic pain and numbness in my lower limbs, making any such walk unimaginable. After much prodding, poking and invasive pummelling by various specialists over the years, all without success, recent treatment has seen my symptoms abate significantly to the point that I am now able to contemplate a challenge of this kind.
So this walk is a very personal celebration and it also provides the opportunity to help Young Minds, one of Omada’s chosen charities in 2018 -19, celebrate its 25th year.
Young Minds is the UK’s leading charity committed to improving the mental health and emotional well-being of children and young people. It strives to campaign, research and influence policy and practice, providing direct support and expert knowledge to kids, young people, parents, and professionals. You can read more about its excellent and vital work by clicking here.
Over the last five years the number of attendances in A&E by young
people aged 18 or under with a recorded diagnosis of a psychiatric
condition has almost doubled. In 2017-18, there were 27,487 such visits to A&E departments, for want of somewhere better to go, right across the UK.
I know we all get a number of these requests to support such worthy causes. I've never undertaken a sponsored event in my adult life, so rest assured this is the first time that I have asked any of my friends and colleagues for sponsorship, and it will quite possibly be the last, unless I get a taste for it! But please do not feel pressured into sponsoring us. We only want you to give willingly and happily.
Omada will match every £1 of sponsorship pledged by my colleagues, former colleagues and friends up to a total of £2,500, so we’re hoping that together we can raise £5,000.
Before I sign off, can I give a shout out to Damon and the team at Encounter Walking who have provided invaluable support in the planning and logistics for this encounter with Dartmoor.
All costs associated with this effort are borne by Omada, so please be assured that every penny raised will go directly to Young Minds.
A heartfelt thank you in advance for any support you can provide.
