Well nice to see you got here!
Those of you that know me pretty well would have seen over the last few years I've started to look after myself better do such things that would have been swear words a while ago like The "Wolf Run", "Lincoln Half marathon". 3 "Duathlons" and even did my first "Triathlon" in 2017. I was often asked why I was doing it which charity it was for etc. The thing was I was just doing it for me to prove a point to myself that I still can when motivated achieve things that I thought were beyond me.
So, it's time to raise some money along the way and I'm doing it for Combat Stress supporting Veterans Mental health. You may or may not know that I served 24years in the Army reaching the rank of Warrant Officer Class 2. Throughout my time in the Army there was a massive change in the way mental health issues were addressed. As you can imagine in the 80's when I joined up things were very different to when I left in 2009. For me personally I know some affected that have manged to reach out and get help and others who are suffering in silence. Hopefully by me raising awareness that there is help out there for them they'll come forward and get the support they need.
There's 8 events in all with the big one is Husky sledding 250km across Norway in March of 2019 but before that I put together a list of events from Duathlons to Gravel bike enduro's to a James Bond themed fundraiser ball at Shottle Hall! Have a look below to see when and where. I've set the target at £5000 so please help me get there by the time the Husky Sledding comes around in whatever way you can.
Here's the list!
March 17th & 18th I'll be doing 2 Duathlons in 2 days. The Clumber Park duathlon on the Saturday then heading down to do the Windsor Duathlon on the Sunday a total of 30km running and 80km on the bike.If you're unsure of what a Duathlon is it's a run followed by a bike then another run! I've done them before so hoping for decent times.
As you may well have seen, the 2in2 Duathlons were victims of the "Beast from the East" and didn't happen! Clumber Park has been re-arranged (5th May) but at the moment there's no new date for the Windsor event
May the 5th Is the re-arranged date for the Clumber Park Duathlon so it's a 5km run, 20km bike followed by a 2.5km run. Straight from that we'll be heading South to watch the final game for AFC Wimbledon!
May the 13th It's more running! The Holymoorside 10k to be exact. If you don't know this race then lets just say it's all downhill after the first 5km....literally!
May the 20th it's the Peak Pioneer in Derbyshire covering 115km on a Mountain bike starting at Bakewell and heading off in a big loop back there!
June the 3rd It's the Tour Of Cambridge where on the Sunday it's the Gran Fondo Sportive on road bikes around Cambridgeshire.
July 22nd I'll be pedaling around the "Epic" circuit of the Nottinghamshire Wheeler this is 162km on road bikes starting at Southwell racecourse.
August 8th We’re having a stand at the Tansley carboot and market. Come along from 7am to get all the best bargains!
October the 12th Something a bit different. I'm holding a James Bond Themed Charity Ball at Shottle Hall near Belper in Derbyshire. For full details go and have a look at https://www.spiritshigh.co.uk/bondball
October the 20th It's another Duathlon! The second of the re-arranged ones from March. I'll be taking on the "Sprint" distance of the Windsor event which takes place around Dorney Lake near Eton.
When 2019 arrives it's time for the big one and also do something pretty damn cool dog sledding with Huskys across Lapland. This is happening from 22nd - 29th March 2019 and involves sledding with my own team of Huskys 270kms across Norway and finishing up in Sweden at the Ice Hotel. I'll have to make sure the dogs are fed & watered along the way and it'll be all self sufficient on the way living in tents carried with us on the Sleds.
The trip itself I'm self funding (£2k) so the Charity isn't paying for me to have a "jolly". That means everything you donate throughout the run up to this goes to help veterans with mental health issues from all 3 services.
Although this final challenge seems a long way off in March of 2019 I need your help raising money for Combat Stress. It's something that has effected a few people around me and I'm sure that my ex Military friends will feel this is a great cause to support. I’m going to be doing the events listed above in the time leading up to the Husky sledding to help me reach my target.
If you can give anything at all that would really be appreciated and don't forget to tick gift aid too.
I'm doing loads of blog / vlog type stuff too so it'll be like you're almost with me.....kind of! You can find that at http://www.paulthompson.co.uk
