Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I am fundraising to support the amazing work B.I.R.D Charity do.
In February 2016 it was evident that my son Charlie (then 3 years old) was experiencing developmental delays and social communication problems. We were advised to get in touch with the B.I.R.D (Brain Injury Rehabilitation & Development) Charity.
After being assessed we were told that Charlie had retained baby reflexes and his adult reflexes were not present as they should have been. He had a high level of neurological dysfunction at 74%, with the "normal" level considered to be between 5% - 20%. We then started B.I.R.D's therapy programme, consisting of daily exercises (which as parents we have the fun task of delivering!).
The impact that the B.I.R.D programme has had on both Charlie's and my family's lives has been remarkable. He has progressed enormously since starting the therapy, reducing his neurological dysfunction to 21% on his last assessment.
The improvements in speech (sentences rather than limited single-word vocabulary), toilet training (goodbye nappies) and fine motor skills (holding a pencil at school) have drastically improved his quality of life. So much so, that he regularly achieves 100% in Maths Tests - I'm not sure where he gets that from!
As we are nearing the end of our involvement with B.I.R.D, I'd like to ensure that other families can benefit from their work. They are a fantastic, but small charity that rely solely on donations and lottery funding.
Charlie is a loving and happy boy, but still faces challenges which he sometimes himself describes as "a little bit scary". Anyone who knows me is aware that I find heights just as frightening, so I have set myself a challenge of abseiling down Peel Tower to raise money for B.I.R.D. It would be great if you could donate so that I can raise as much money as possible, to enable them to deliver treatment to more children and adults.
