The Society of St James is experiencing a ‘winter rush’ with up to 50 people each day using their Homeless Day Service in Portsmouth and many of those also using the Night Service. It is feared that this will only get worse as the winter gets colder.

 They have bought three properties and leased one from a private landlord. This provides 23 additional beds for homeless people. They are buying and leasing more and have asked us for help in two ways, when they move someone into one of their properties, they like to give them a starter pack containing essential household items, such as saucepans, cooking utensils, crockery, cutlery, towels and bedding. Those that they cannot accommodate, the rough sleepers, use their ‘Day Service’ and they need basics like warm underwear and socks, vests and basic toiletries.
