London Landmarks Half Marathon 2021 · 1 August 2021 ·
Hey! Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
March is my birthday month and I am humbly asking for a little birthday gift here <3
On 29th March 2020, I will be taking on the massive challenge of running the London Landmarks Half Marathon. If you know me, you'd know that running isn't exactly my favorite activity. But I have teamed up with my lovely friend Artiola Berisha for a good cause.
My goal is to finish the 13 mile (21km) run in 2.5 hours. Your support will make a massive difference and really help me to make it to that finish line!
- My STORY -
My grandfather suffered from Alzheimer's disease in his late 70s. I truly understand how painful and difficult it is, not only to the patient, but to the patient's family members.
When I was in primary school, my family's Sunday routine was visiting my grandpa at the care home, took him out for dimsum in the morning and then go for a walk with him in the afternoon. I remember one time when me and my dad arrived at the care home, the nurse said my grandpa was missing. He grab his stuffs and sneaked out that morning, apparently without knowing where he was going. I was running around on the street with tears in my eyes, spent the whole afternoon looking for him. I couldn't t find him. I helplessly sat next to the door of the care home, couldn't do anything except crying and praying for him to come back. It was a devastating experience. Fortunately the police found him at the end of the night and he was unharmed.
As my grandpa's condition got worse, he could barely recognize me during his last days. We used to be so close and he could pick me up from kindergarten and take me to McDonald's to get ice cream (that's our little secret that we kept away from my mom). Before he passed away, I was by his bed side holding his hand, he was so skinny and he couldn't say my name because he couldn't recognize me. That broke my heart.
That was part of the reason why I took Psychology and neuroscience as my major study in university, attempting to understand the way how human brains function. I believe that using the right strategy, Alzheimer's is highly preventable, and with more resources put into research I wish one day we will be able to find a cure.
- WHY Alzheimer's Society -
I highly appreciate the research they have done contributing to finding a cure for Alzheimer's Disease. One of the most recent and interesting research they have conducted with University of Bath was on the effectiveness of Epicatechin on slowing the process of building toxic clumps of proteins, amyloid and tau, around our brain cells (which causes Dementia).
Epicatechin is a naturally occurring compound called a flavonol. It is found in many common plant foods such as fruit, nuts and seeds, chocolate and drinks such as tea and coffee.
- MY IMPLEMENTATION -
I have cut down my strength training to twice a week. Also put myself on a caloric deficit (Haven't had my favorite Red Velvet cake for ages) since February to get leaner to run faster.
I have been consistently running home from work during my lunch break three times a week (From London Bridge to Stratford). The longest run I have done in the past month was 7 miles (12km) and I am looking to build the distance up to 13miles (21km) in the next four weeks.
