Story

WE DID IT!!

After 14 days on the bike, lots of tears, lots of laughter, amazing support both on and off the bike we made it to the finish line having completed 956 miles. We have been utterly blown away by the support of so many people. Our community has pulled together and it is simply by the love, support, kindness and generosity of everyone that we made it to the end. It took 6 people to sit on a bike but it took a village to get us to the end.

We have been humbled by this experience and we know that by raising the money we will have changed another mans and another families journey through cancer.

THANK YOU will never be enough.

Our Story

In June 2020, during the first coronavirus lockdown, following a routine PSA test our dad was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. His prognosis was very poor, he had a Gleason Score of 9 the tumour was inoperable and the cancer had spread. He was given anywhere between 6 months and 2 years to live. Having had no symptoms and given that dad had asked for the PSA test this was a huge shock to everyone.

But, for those who are fortunate enough to know Glenn Campbell, they will know he is not one for being dictated to(!) and of course, like the gritty, determined and obstinate man he is, he decided ‘with respect’ to prove his oncologist wrong and as a family we decided to stand up to cancer.

Following his diagnosis and after radiotherapy and pioneering hormone therapy treatment in the way of enzalutamide Dad is now classed as a ‘responder’, in that he is responding to enzalutamide and his PSA is now as low as it has ever been which we feel is exceptional. Whilst we do not know how long the drugs will continue to work and we know our Dad will not be with us forever, as a family we remain cautiously optimistic and committed in our fight against this disease.

As well as the excellent treatment dad has received from his oncology team, mum and dad have been blown away by the support of friends and family over the last 6 months.

Now, as a family it’s our turn to give back. So, from 04 September 2021 - 19 September 2021 the Campbell girls Abi Green, Becky Watton and Jodie D'Enrico (as many miles as she can muster with a dodgy knee) have decided to ride the 956 miles of Lands End to John O’Groats around Lancashire, starting and finishing each day in Lytham in 14 days to raise vital, life-saving money for Prostate Cancer UK. At the helm providing ground support will be our team captain and our amazing mum, Barbara Campbell. The team domistiques so far are Becky’s husband Richard (stabilisers) and family friend Phil Parkes (pro-am) but we'd love others to volunteer (i.e. for cake baking, bike mending and muscle rubbing) so please get in touch with Barbara Campbell if you think you can help! Needless to say the rest of the family will be avidly supporting us on our journey.

We truly hope that Dad, who is currently recovering from radiotherapy, will be joining us along the way. Having ridden Lands End to John O’Groats twice before we have no doubt by September Dad will be leading the peloton.

We are also asking friends to join us - we’ve already had so many people offer to ride a day/ selection of days with us which we are extremely excited about!!

Every man should have the opportunity for early diagnosis, ground breaking treatment and support for prostate cancer. The only way for this to happen is to raise money. All that is left is to say a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who has supported us and continues to do so. We are already in training and hope to make you all proud!!

Here’s to life, life saving and life prolonging treatment oh, and ‘on ya bike cancer’!
