We are raising money for Samaritans and the NSPA throughout
2018. Suicide and attempted suicide is something that affects a significant number of people. This charity was nominated by a member of our team, and below is her story:

“My Dad suffers with a number of complex health problems, including mental health issues. These mental health issues caused him to not want to live anymore as he wasn’t getting the help he desperately needed. After two suicide attempts, we are so very lucky that we were able to get there in time and save his life, and that he is still here with us today. We tried to be there as much as we could, but specialist help was what he needed.  Luckily, after a lengthy battle and many cries for help, he did finally get the help and treatment required and is in a much better place, however some people aren’t so lucky. Samaritans is a fantastic charity which helps not only the individual but also their friends and families who have been bereaved or affected by suicide. Suicide is more and more common and is very close to home with the experiences we have gone through as a family. It is something that you can
never forget.

This charity offers support and help for those that see no other way out. Mental health isn't something to be ashamed of, or something too scary to talk about. There are thousands of people who suffer with this issues on a daily basis. My Dad often shares his story to help others and reaches out to people via social media which also enables him to talk about how he is feeling and reassures others not to be afraid and to help reduce the stigma attached with mental health. We talk about it openly as a family and hope that my Dad's bravery can also help others."

The National Suicide Prevention Alliance (NSPA) is an alliance of public, private and voluntary organisations in England who care about suicide prevention and are willing to take individual and collective action to reduce suicide and support those bereaved or affected by suicide.

Samaritans is a member of the National Suicide Prevention Alliance (NSPA), an alliance of public, private and voluntary organisations in England with the aim of suicide prevention and supporting people bereaved by suicide. Samaritans provides the Secretariat for and hosts the NSPA, in its role as an NSPA member.
