Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Punjabi Rams are delighted to announce that the Royal School for the Deaf Derby will be their chosen charity for the 2017/18 season.

Royal School for the Deaf Derby (RSDD) is a non-maintained residential special school registered as a charity with children aged between 3 and 19.  All of the children are deaf, but many have additional needs too. Children can be residential from Monday to Friday and live on campus in purpose built accommodation. RSDD will be 125 years old in October 2018 and has a strong and long standing heritage. The school has a community of deaf and hearing staff who strive to offer the best possible education for deaf children. The school is a signing and speaking community where languages and culture of both deaf and hearing people are valued. RSDD aims to prepare young people for adult life through independence and qualifications for life.

As well as supporting Derby County the Punjabi Rams have a track record of fundraising for charities each season which has seen them fundraise over £20,000 in the past three seasons. The most recent project was the successful #NicksKitCollection which saw Punjabi Rams team up with Nick Blackman to collect kits from fans all over the world to send out to children in Barbados and India.

“A lot of discussions took place in the close season in identifying a project which would resonate with our members and our local community in Derby. The Royal School for the Deaf is close to a number of our members, especially myself as my father and uncle were pupils at the school and my cousin currently is a student at the school. It is the perfect match for us as a supporters group and we cannot wait to start working with the school to help reach their fundraising targets.” Jaideep Mann from Punjabi Rams.

Punjabi Rams will be carrying out a number of fundraising activities throughout the season to help reach the £7000 target which will enable the Student Cafe at the Royal School for the Deaf to be renovated. The Student Cafe is an area within the school where children and young people spend their break times if they are unable to go outside due to bad weather or prefer an indoor space. The area is also used for visitors when the school has productions and performances. Pupils in Year 11 lead the Tuck Shop, taking turns to serve and keep account of spending with support, where all food served is healthy and nutritional.

The whole area is ‘tired’ there are cracks in the skylights which means that the roof leaks on rainy days. As a result, floor coverings will get ruined hence why the current area has a concrete floor.

“We are absolutely thrilled that Punjabi Rams have chosen us for their charity. As a Derby County Season Ticket holder myself, I have a keen interest in football and understand the passion of Punjabi Rams.  We have the same passion in our school to improve facilities for our pupils. We are looking forward to working together to raise funds and celebrate the RSDD being established for 125 years in Derby.” Helen Shepherd (Headteacher at Royal School for the Deaf Derby)

Money raised throughout the season would be spent on decorating of the space (paint, flooring, and lighting), the replacement of the skylight (to provide natural day light into the dark area). The school will also purchase new seating and other furniture as well as flooring that is more homely as well as practical.

“We are looking forward to working with the school over the course of the season and will endeavour to raise as many funds as we can to aid the school.” Pav Samra, founder of the Punjabi Rams.
