We help blind and partially sighted people to break down the barriers of sight loss

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Hi Friends and Family and anyone interested in the RNIB,

I’m on my 3rd marathon but my first major endeavour to raise funds for a charity that I believe in and wish to support. The RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind People) aim to support independent living for those affected by sight loss via practical and emotional support including creating libraries of talking books for children and adults, radio programmes; a helpline and information assisting in job searches, community inclusion, and living with sight loss advice. There is also a big effort to support eye health and sight loss prevention where possible. RNIB is active across Britain and supports over 170,000 people in Scotland alone.

A shocking fact is that every day 250 people start to lose their sight. We should never take our seeing abilities for granted which is why I know I need to truly do all I can to work to keep what I have for as long as possible - especially as I work on a computer screen so much. The RNIB currently reach 1 in 3 of those people in Britain. 82 pence of every pound raised for the RNIB goes directly to their support programmes and services.

For those who know me, I’m a keen runner but a rather slow one! I am ever hopeful to run stronger and for the first time am running the London Marathon on April 22nd 2018. I am hoping 3rd time lucky for me to break 5 hours and if I can include intervals in my training I may even try to be closer to 4 and half hours which is my “open-secret” objective.

I’m aiming to raise £2,000 for the RNIB which I realise is quite a hefty sum. It costs the RNIB £396 pounds to get a charity bond place in the London marathon - so I’ve already kick started the fundraising by adding £400. This means that no one is donating to help pay for my spot - I’ve done that already - so all funds raised are going to the RNIB’s services!

Any donation to the RNIB on my justigving page is gratefully received - no pledge is too small and please spread the word about the RNIB. Stay tuned for a possible sensory evening of food and/or song. The more I can raise the more motivated I will be to also see if I can run this as well as I can :)

Thanks for reading!
Warm wishes,
Rachel
