The teenage cancer trust was established in 1990. The trust raises funds to pay for treatment of young people with cancer as well as research to enable advances in treatment.
As a mother of teenage children, I have been thinking a lot about all the young people I have had the privilege to know over the many years that I worked in the NHS.
When I first qualified as a paediatric nurse in 1993, I worked on a paediatric ward at a teaching hospital in London, specialising in paediatric oncology. Treatment was aggressive and unfortunately not as effective as it is today. Young people spent months and months in hospital. The side effects and social isolation they suffered was profound and had a huge impact on the rest of their lives. Sadly many did not survive.
The teenage cancer trust has helped to change this. The trust has set up 28 units in NHS hospitals across the country treating young people between the ages of 13 and 24. These units are led by specialist staff and provide an environment that reflects the unique needs of young people. The trust has also contributed to advances in treatment that mean that the outcomes for young people with cancer today are much improved on 25 years ago.
