Story

Edit:

I will keep the initial page the same but things have changed somewhat!

I am now going to Croatia to do this challenge alone. Obviously, there will be like minded ladies who I will be joining out there but not people I know!

Why? Because Mary has had the amazing news she is expecting. 7 month pregnant on a bike is obviously not on her radar! She will still  be very much involves in supporting me with the challenge!

Congratulations Mary xxx

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

For those who know me this is a challenge and a half! Rightly or wrongly my car is normally my prefered mode of transport.

So...

My friend Mary was diagnosed with breast cancer in November. A few weeks back she mentioned she was considering a bike ride in Croatia to raise money for three women's cancer charities; breast, ovarian and cervical cancers. Mary asked if I'd like to join her in this bike ride. I scan read and thought, wow, an amazing cause 30km a day sounds doable. So I said yes.

The following day I reread to realise I had misread and it was in fact 100km a day over 3 days - eek!

However, I'd given my word and for the reasons below, I am 100% committed.

Over the years I have come into contact with many inspirational women who have fought (and lost) the cancer fight.

It is something we are all aware of but nothing makes it more real than it effecting someone to you are close to.  To see a young lady, who is well and healthy to suddenly get a breast cancer diagnosis shows how this could happen to anyone of us, at any time. Within the last 6 months Mary has undergone chemotherapy, due an operation imminently and then will need radiotherapy.

Then she suggests a charity bike ride! Truly brave and inspirational!

Mary's post from her Just Giving page:

Most of you who know me know that I was diagnosed November 2018 with Breast Cancer, and am still undergoing treatment. By the time I am in Croatia I will have finished treatment and will be starting to rebuild my body and life.

This is a perfect challenge to give me a new focus, get my body back to fitness, work towards helping great charities, and celebrate with other fantastic women, life and womanhood. And, I get to do it with my good friend Becky by my side! I need to raise £2,000 (£925 charity challenge costs) so because of this, I would like to try to double my donation target. I am extremely grateful for any amount of donation and to help spread awareness.

The treatment for cancer takes so much away from both men and women, and I struggled particularly the feeling of losing the things that made me a woman and feminine. It's a dark, tiring and confusing time, but I am lucky enough that there is an end to my treatment and I can pay back the help, love, support and care everyone has  given me. Starting with raising essential funds to not just continue to fuel the fight against cancer, but to help fund the specific support that women need from these particular cancers.

The photo on my page shows you the day my amazing fiancé George, shaved my head on Boxing Day. I still had eyebrows and eyelashes at that point!

A woman is like a tea bag. You don't know how strong she can be until she is in hot water.

We will both be cycling the 300km in Croatia next May. It is going to take a lot of hard work and commitment but nothing in comparison to the difficulties people with cancer and also their families have to cope with.

Thanks for listening and any donations are very much appreciated

Thanks

Becky
