Story

1st World War Remembrance 100 - Charity Cycle to The Valley of the Somme

On 16th February 1918 my Grandfather, Henry Evans, was killed in action near Ham in the Valley of the Somme southeast of Amiens. The reports that I have seen show that he, alongside many of his comrades that day, was a victim of a large bomb-blast. He  was 29 years old. My Grandmother Emily Evans remained a Widow for c70 years and raised my Mother and Auntie on her own. I never heard her complain.

My Grandfather was one of 888,246 British and Commonwealth fallen of the First World War.I have recently been able to obtain information that accurately locates my Grandfather’s War Grave via The Commonwealth War Graves Commission. As a result I am aiming to cycle from the family home that he left in Wistanstow, Shropshire in 1914 to The British War Cemetery at Muille Villette near the River Somme, a distance of around 700 kms. I am cycling in September, this during the current Remembrance 100 Days of Peace and Hope leading up to the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day on 11th November 2018.
