UPDATE Apr 2021

I'm happy to now confirm that I've set a new date for my run of Friday 2 July 2021. If you would like to join me for any of it, please let me know! Thanks

UPDATE Jan 2021
Sadly my run was postponed due to 'lockdown 2' in November. I have been hoping to rearrange for a date early in 2021 but due to the new lockdown, I haven't yet been able to set a date. I'm now looking at March/April. I will share a further update as soon as I have a date fixed.

-----------

October 2020

In late July this year while out on a walk in the woods with mum, my sister (Jess) noticed a strange tingling in her feet. After an initial visit to the doctor, within 2 days Jess was in a stroke ward in Harrogate Hospital and within a week she was in intensive care and the doctors had diagnosed her with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS).

GBS is a rare autoimmune condition that affects the peripheral nervous system and can affect anybody, of any age. For Jess, this meant paralysis that quickly spread throughout her body. She spent several weeks in ITU having intensive treatment, during which time the paralysis also spread to her face. After over a month in hospital, Jess is hoping to move onto a rehabilitation ward soon and has a long road to recovery over the coming weeks and months.

As you can imagine, this has been a real shock for Jess and our whole family, particularly for her husband, Dave and her daughters Alice (3 1/2) and Sylvia (18m).

It's likely that you have never heard of GBS (I certainly hadn't!) so a good place to read about it is: www.gaincharity.org.uk

I have set up this page to raise money for GAIN, as the only organisation dedicated to helping people affected by GBS. GAIN helps people understand and manage both acute and chronic variants of the syndrome, raises awareness, and promotes clinical and non-clinical research into these conditions.

On a Saturday in October I will be running 55 miles from my flat in Catford to my other sister's (Sarah) house in Upper Basildon.

PLEASE NOTE: Gift Aid is working again on so please make sure to add it (if applicable). For sponsorships before May 2021 I will follow up for some basic contact details to ensure Gift Aid is added back on.

About the charity

GAIN is dedicated to helping people affected by GBS, CIDP and the associated inflammatory neuropathies. We provide information and support to patients and their families, raise awareness of the conditions amongst medical and social care professionals, and help to fund and facilitate research.
