Story
'Robbie' the Robot at the Royal Berkshire Hospital
To stay at the forefront of cancer care, in 2008 the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust acquired a da Vinci Robot, allowing surgeons to perform robot assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy. This clinical programme has been very successful and is now being rolled out to other specialities. The £1.2m cost of the robot exceeded normal NHS capacity so, in order that patients could immediately benefit, Mr Adam Jones, Consultant Urologist at the Royal Berkshire Hospital and his team, launched a fundraising campaign to acquire the robot.
Over a million pounds has been raised from multiple fundraising events and public support towards the cost of the robot and we are delighted that the robot is now owned outright.
However the appeal remains open and fundraising is continuing so that more surgical teams can be trained in robotic surgery and your donations will help to ensure that as many patients as possible can benefit from the latest surgical techniques.
