Race to the Stones 100Km Ultra Marathon · 8 September 2022

We provide facilities & encourage participation in sport & recreation for all who are part of the armed forces community. For those in need, are the interactions we design and deliver between human and horse. Plus our wider welfare and wellbeing work is delivered through our community hubs and cafe.

Story

Every year, Wiltshire Council runs a Swim Challenge and this year it includes the Race to the Stones, a 100 km (62 miles) Ultra Marathon along The Ridgeway in Oxfordshire and Wiltshire. To complete the challenge you have to swim this distance which means 4,000 lengths of the standard 25m swimming pool. I have now completed this and believe me, it was a very long way!
However, I have now decided to take on another challenge to swim the equivalent of The English Channel - 21 miles , that's 1,352 lengths of the pool, and to complete this by Christmas. Wish me luck!

Even although I have now passed my 78th birthday, I am determined to succeed in the challenges. There is a very good reason for this.

My wife Ann has multiple sclerosis, so we have personal experience of how something like this can affect the lives of both family and friends – it is very challenging.

We both love to watch polo at Tedworth Park Polo Club which is closely associated with The Armed Forces Equine Charity. When we learned more about the amazing work which this Charity does in supporting members of the military community and their families who are experiencing both physical and mental health issues, we wanted to give them our support and we hope you will too.

The work that the Charity does is amazing and truly heart warming. Horses are such sensitive creatures and react to people in a uniquely gentle way. Equine therapy is becoming increasingly recognised for treating a wide range of conditions affecting physical and mental health and the Charity also supports the work of the NHS in its holistic approach to these conditions.

The Charity has many roles centred on health and well-being in the military community. It provides vital welfare hubs at the heart of military garrisons and stations as well as access to equine recreation and sporting activities.
