Story
After my career ending fall at Lingfield in March 2011, the Injured Jockeys Fund were there to help me and my family during the toughest time in my life. Thanks to their support, I am now enjoying a second career in the sport I love so I want to raise money to help the Injured Jockeys Fund help others who are facing the same uncertainties.
The Injured Jockeys Fund was the brainchild of founding Trustee and past President John Oaksey and came about following the devastating accidents of Tim Brookshaw and Paddy Farrell in 1964. Both falls resulted in severe paralysis which immediately ended their careers.
Since then the Fund has helped over 1000 jockeys and their families and has paid out more than £18m in charitable assistance. The Fund has a team of nine Almoners who liaise directly with beneficiaries on a support basis.
The IJF also works closely with racing authorities and other organisations and part funds on course physios, medical services and also research into improved riding protection equipment for jockeys which has resulted in a number of improved manufacturing standards being implemented.
In 2009 it opened its first rehabilitation centre, Oaksey House, in Lambourn and in April 2015 opened Jack Berry House a second state-of-the-art rehabilitation and fitness centre in Malton for northern based jockeys.
The 100 mile cycle starts at the Olympic Park in London and follows much of the route cycled by Mark Cavendish and the est of the 2012 Olympic road race. There are a few fearsome hills to conquer before finishing up the Mall in front of Buckingham Palace. I'm cycling with Lucy Charnock who was my Almoner during my time in hospital.
