We fund research to stop prostate cancer killing men

Story

Hi everyone, thanks for looking at my fundraising page.

At the end of April I'm setting off on a challenge to cycle over 1,000 miles in 15 days from Lands End to John o'Groats to raise essential funding for Prostate Cancer UK, and awareness of prostate cancer.

I've had a couple of health warnings over the last few years, which have prompted me to seize the moment and attempt this cycling challenge, which is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time.

In early 2021 I was diagnosed with blood clots on my lungs, and when the doctors did more tests they found that I had prostate cancer. I've recently finished radiotherapy, and will find out in a couple of months whether I need further treatment. But I'll probably be on blood thinners for the rest of my life, which is no hardship. However, it does mean my lungs are slightly damaged and, as a result, I am often short of breath. This is a long winded way for me to excuse myself for using an ebike for this cycling challenge. But rest assured, it'll still be hard work!

I'm 75 years old/young, and my youngest daughter Sophia is joining me on this challenge and will, together with my wife Lucy, be providing a day by day update of our progress on social media.

I'm doing this cycling challenge to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK, a charity that conducts vital research to find better testing and treatment for prostate cancer, that provides essential support to those living with the disease, and that raises vital awareness. I knew before that cancers, such as prostate cancer, can get passed on inadvertently from parent to child but I am horrified that my diagnosis could cause problems for my son and my 3 grandsons. The best way I can help them is by raising money for Prostate Cancer UK so that scientists can continue their incredible research that aims to diagnose early, provide life saving treatment, and stop people losing their lives to prostate cancer.

Prostate Cancer UK’s work will also benefit my 3 daughters and 3 granddaughters, as the charity works closely with other cancer charities to pass on any information and findings that would help their own research.

Although this is a trip I've wanted to do for a long while, it is bound to be extremely taxing in parts. I'd greatly appreciate your support, and if you feel that you can support my chosen charity financially, then that would be terrific.

Thanks

Roger
