Story
S.A.R.A.I.D is a small British charity that specialises in providing humanitarian assistance to countries impacted by natural disasters including earthquakes, storms, tsunamis and landslides. We operate as Search and Rescue Technicians, Engineers, Medics and Logistics and Coordination Officers and amazingly our team consists entirely of volunteers.
We are on standby 365 days a year and can deploy at 24 hours’ notice. Our deployments include responding to the Port Au Prince earthquake in Haiti in 2010, the Kathmandu earthquake in Nepal in 2015 and Hurricane Irma in the Caribbean in 2017, as well as flooding in Britain in 2007 and 2014.
The international team also carries out project work to help prepare communities most at risk of disasters. For example, we are currently training the Nepalese Scouts and monks how to respond within the first few hours following an earthquake.
Furthermore, we have a newly established volunteer Avon Community Resilience Team (CRT) that supports the Emergency Services and Local Authority in their response to emergencies and major incidents, as well as helping local communities cope in the aftermath of such events.
