Support After Rape and Sexual Violence Leeds (SARSVL) is an accredited Rape Crisis Centre, providing free, independent and confidential specialist support services to women and girls in Leeds whose lives have been affected by sexual violence and abuse of any kind, at any time. All their services are underpinned by a feminist rationale, which actively tackles sexual violence against women and girls by providing specialist support services, including helplines, counselling and Independent Sexual Violence Advocates (ISVAs) to young women from the age of 16, in a women-only safe space, as well as awareness raising projects and specialist training.
I have been, and occasionally still am, a user of their service. SARSVL has fought alongside me and kept me going when I was little else but broken, and I owe a huge part of my current well-being to their support and their belief in my story.
There is always more to be done when it comes to awareness raising and access to appropriate support for women and girls who experience sexual violence. It's still estimated that only 6 in every 1000 perpetrators of rape are even found guilty. I am running for SARSVL to raise awareness not just of their service but of the local, national and international ways that violence against women and girls continues, and what we all can do to stop it.
