Story
Ruga is a community within Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria. Many people living nearby do not know that it exists. It is basically an unofficial Displaced people's camp. When you enter Ruga, you are faced with hundreds of tents made from cement bags and planks of wood.
Throughout the coming months, we are running skills classes for the women, to provide them with a skill that they can then use to support their families.
We are beginning with a tailoring class. With the help of Mission Africa and individuals back home, we were able to buy 4 sewing machines. There are 10 ladies in the class. We still need money for materials, money to pay the two tailors that will teach the class and when the ladies graduate from the class after 3 or 4 months, we plan to give them each their own sewing machine so that they can begin their tailoring businesses.
We also want to start a literacy class. The majority of the ladies that I have met cannot read or write. Other skills classes that we also hope to start include hair-braiding, jewellery making and knitting.
These classes will make such a difference to these women and their families. Please help us to make these classes possible so that the women can be relieved from the level of poverty they are currently experiencing.
