On 29th September 2019 we are running the Great Scottish Run Half Marathon in memory of our cousin Ned. Two years ago, aged 20, Ned took his own life.
In response to this tragedy, Ned's Mum set up Ned's Fund, which aims to support young people facing challenges in life, provide opportunities for them and raise awareness of the issue of suicide in young people.
"A lack of self worth and a sense of 'pointlessness' can cause young people to want to end their life; this is often born out of a lack of structure and the absence of specific interests in life. Ned's Fund will be devoted to supporting charities which give young people, like Ned, a chance to do something entirely new; offering them vocational training to discover more about themselves and a clear way of seeing their true potential. We are hoping to give as many opportunities as possible to young people between the ages of 12 and 24."
One example of how Ned's fund supports young people is by working with Jamie’s Farm, an organisation based in Lewes, East Sussex. Through a combination of farming, family and therapy, Jamie's Farm provides unique experiences for young people who are struggling in educational settings, designed to cultivate better engagement, enhance wellbeing, and build self esteem.
Already, Ned's Fund is working closely with Bohunt secondary school in Hampshire and has provided funding for 10 students to take part in a 5 day residential programme at Jamie's farm this November.
We are training at the moment (This is Lucy's first half marathon and Emily’s second). We would love for you to join us in supporting Ned's Fund by making a donation big or small.
Thank you so much for your support. Any running tips welcome too!
