Nobody said life would be simple or straightforward….. That's why each of us should enjoy every day, hour, and moment that we get. We only have one life and IT'S AN AWESOME TREASURE!

This year I have decided to go beyond my nice and cozy comfort zone and do something what I was always dreaming of. I'm going to run a half marathon, marathon and 50k ultra in one year! Why???....

I was strongly inspired by Suzy, who was one of my patients on the Trauma Ward in John Radcliffe Hospital in 2012. Suzy sustained life threatening injuries and was admitted to the Trauma ward for 3 ½ /4 months. She has had numerous operations and has been in and out of hospital for the last year and a half.

Now, nearly a year and half since her accident, she is slowly improving, but there is still long way to go and life will never be quite the same. She is the strongest person I have ever met and I believe she will manage to get through this tough time.

Suzy retells some of the story: “Prior to my accident I was working as a vet nurse at B and W Equine vets in Gloucestershire, having finished my degree in Equine Science at the Royal Agricultural University in Cirencester. I have competed up to international 2** level/young riders eventing. Life was pretty amazing, I had a dream job straight out of university, great friends and the horses were going well competing.

On the evening of 26th July 2012, I was breaking in a young horse when he reared over and landed on top of me. To add insult to injury, he rolled back across me to get up.

I knew instantly that I was in trouble. Within what felt like a split second my dream life was turned upside down. I felt as though doors were slammed on all the facets of my life and everything I knew and loved was taken away from me, bit by bit. Luckily I had one of my great friends (Lucy) from the yard helping me and trying to keep me as calm as possible. Amidst my screaming I remember squeezing her hand very hard. I was in an immense amount of pain and I knew things weren’t right.

The rapid response vehicles were the first to arrive but it soon became clear that I needed to get to hospital as quickly as possible due to the fact that I was presenting signs of a spinal injury. I can’t remember much about my time lying on the ground, but I can remember that the Thames Valley and Chiltern air ambulance got to me very quickly and took control of the situation. I was soon on my way to the John Radcliffe Hospital. I was absolutely terrified, as I couldn’t feel or move my legs, and I thought I was paralysed. The crew kept me as calm as possible and really reassured me, even though I feared the worst. I can’t thank the team enough. They were truly incredible and really did save my life. Had I not been immobilised there was a high possibility that I would have severed a major blood vessel and I would not be here today. I was also very close to damaging my spinal cord, in which case I would still be paralysed. I am very lucky in that respect.

Once I was airlifted to the John Radcliffe, it was confirmed that I had sustained a substantial amount of nerve damage and broken my spine and pelvis in a number of places. I had also sustained a huge hematoma within my spinal canal that was pressing up against my spinal cord, causing paralysis in both legs. After a couple of weeks, as the swelling went down, I started to regain some movement back in my right leg. My left foot/ ankle, will never be perfect. However, hopefully in time I can regain some movement back.

I was initially in the John Radcliffe for 3½ /4 months and went through a number of horrible experiences (operations, illness, withdrawals, and allergic reactions). In 2012 I had my birthday, christmas and graduation in hospital, which was all pretty tough. 

The Thames Valley and Chiltern air ambulance were fabulous and really worked as a team. The speed in which they came to my aid and conveyed me to the John Radcliffe was fantastic. I felt relieved when they arrived, as I knew I was in incredibly safe hands. There are no words that describe how truly grateful I am to the Thames Valley and Chiltern air ambulance team. 

I know I will come through this awful time in my life, I will be a stronger person in the end and this experience has certainly changed my perspective on life. When you are in a similar position to me you realise what life means to you and how lucky most of us are. In hospital you also realise there will always be someone worse off than you, whether it’s the injury, illness or the lack of support they have around them. I feel now that if there are any more unplanned obstacles that come my way, I can get through them. I am not going to let my accident rule my life”.

Thanks to their speed, professionalism, knowledge and experience she is still with us. They saved Suzy's life! 

Many people are not aware of it, but quite simply The Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance save lives every day!

I'm going to do these 3 runs and collect as much money as possible to support The Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance, so they will be able to rescue more people and safe more fragile lives in the future.
