Story

As many of you know, I was born without arms, due to the drug Thalidomide.
Thalidomide was freely prescribed in the late 50s/early 60s to help pregnant women with morning sickness.
I have adjusted to a life without arms by using my feet for all daily tasks, such as getting dressed, combing my hair, writing, using a computer keyboard and driving my non-modified car.
However, in May 2012 I suffered a massive stroke while driving my car.
My entire left side was paralyzed. I had to learn how to walk and how to use my left foot for all daily tasks again. 12 months after the stroke I could barely walk 1 mile.
I have trained very hard for the last 6 months to run/walk the 26.2 mile Los Angeles Marathon. I believe , anybody who is Armed with Perseverance, regardless of their abilities, can turn possibilities into empowering reality.
Growing up in Germany, I was fortunate enough to have many recreational opportunities, which helped me grow my self-esteem and confidence.
Please help me to make sure that KEEN can continue to provide free outdoor opportunities for children and young adults with special needs.
I will run the Los Angeles Marathon to support KEEN, and I would appreciate your support for KEEN, by making a donation.
Thank you so much.

About the charity

KEEN USA (Kids Enjoy Exercise Now) is a national, volunteer-led non-profit organization that provides one-to-one exercise and recreational programs for children and young adults with cognitive and physical disabilities at no cost to their families or caregivers. KEEN’s Mission Empower youth with disabilities by providing free, non-competitive one-to-one programs of exercise, fitness and fun, led by volunteer coaches. KEEN’s Vision Foster confidence, self-esteem and community inclusion for youth with disabilities; strengthen communities through education of volunteers; and provide families with respite and a supportive network. KEEN provides physical activity opportunities for one of the hardest to serve populations of cognitively and physically disabled children and young adults in our communities. Our KEEN athletes have autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome and other significant physical or intellectual disabilities. For our athletes who have extensive cognitive and/or physical disabilities or those who are nonverbal, KEEN is often the only organization that can accommodate their special needs. The benefits of KEEN are three-fold. KEENs programs provide our athletes with exercise and physical activity, parents or caregivers are provided with much needed respite, and our volunteers come to understand and accept differences in others and are empowered to become community volunteer leaders.
