For those of you that don't know Poppy (born on the morning of the London Marathon) had a tough first 2 years of her life. As she was about to turn 1 she became very poorly and we nearly lost her, lots of damage to the nervous system in the brain had occurred causing her to become very poorly. We were lucky enough to find out that the damage was not a brain disorder but had been caused by a genetically inherited metabolic disease called Maple Syrup Urine Disease. We were transferred to the care of the specialist metabolic team at Sheffield Children's hospital and have been under their care ever since. 

MSUD is a disease that means Poppy cannot metabolise protein. Protein in her body is toxic and degenerates the nervous system in her brain which without treatment and management will cause coma and death. We have worked with the Sheffield metabolic team ever since to enable Pops to recover and now develop and grow. Poppy will always be at high risk of becoming very poorly quite quickly but is now such a determined little girl. 

Given that Pops was born on the morning of the London marathon and her birthday falls on the weekend of most years it seems fitting to run it and dedicate it to her and the amazing team that support us. Hopefully one day she will run it with me :-)
