Friends, family, acquaintances, adversaries:
I've registered to run in London's British 10K this summer, on the day of the World Cup final and the day before Bastille Day. I'm running on behalf of Team UC and its Davis sub-group. I've set up this fundraising page to raise money for scholarships for UC Davis students to study abroad through the UC Education Abroad Program (as far as I know, this is limited to the EAP programs rather than UC Davis EAC). Here are a number of reasons why you should donate:
1. Davis is competing in a fundraising race with the other UCs that have alumni associations here (Berkeley, UCLA, UCSB, and UCSD). Obviously we're better, but those stupid Tridents won't acknowledge that unless we raise more money than them (who names their mascot after a brand of gum anyway?).
2. Every £ you donate increases USA's chance of winning the World Cup by 1%. Or 500%. Mathematically, both are equally accurate.
3. If you're based in the US, you can practice converting $ to £, as this page is based in the UK. I promise it's really fun! (On a related note, start listing your weight in stone from now on.)
4. Seriously though, studying abroad is awesome. As an undergraduate, I did one summer program in Buenos Aires and I had an amazing time. It was my first time outside of North America or Western Europe, so it was an eye-opening experience culturally. Every student should have that opportunity, especially those whose families couldn't afford to leave the US when they were growing up. This fundraising page directly benefits those people.
Thank you for reading and (hopefully) contributing.
