Story

The Bone Marrow for Leukaemia Trust is an amazing organisation that is dedicated to supporting Irish people who have leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma who need stem cell transplants. The Bone Marrow for Leukaemia Trust provides apartments where patients can comfortably stay post-operatively, supports the running of the haematology department in  St James’s Hospital (the only location in Ireland where adults can receive a sibling or matched unrelated stem cell transplant), and funds labs which undertake cutting edge clinical research and drug development. Over the course of one week beginning Monday the 15th of February we will be attempting to raise €30,000 for this fantastic charity. In light of the current situation, we have had to completely change our normal fundraising methods but are hopeful that we can still beat our fundraising target through a variety of events taking place during the week – including selling ‘UCD Medicine’ branded merchandise, an online quiz and a sponsored 5km run.  Usually, the week culminates on Friday with Med Day where hundreds of students take to the streets to bucket collect, however, this year it will be replaced with an online group fundraiser, whereby students will sign up to be part of the fundraising team and commit to taking part in various challenges that they will be free to set for themselves, such as shaving their head or doing a sea swim. The success of Med Week depends entirely on the generosity of our supporters and the public.  We understand that this has been an especially difficult year but any donation possible would be hugely appreciated whether it to be to someone you know or a challenge or fundraiser you would like to support within our team!
