Story

God willing and weather permitting, I'm again proposing to take part in the Suffolk Historic Churches Sponsored Bike Ride this coming Saturday, 12 Sept, but this time Clive (my husband) is coming too. I'll be donning those padded knickers and crash hat, and we’ll be biking from church to church (of all denominations) with our friend, Trevor Phillips. I have to confess we’ll be on electric bikes this time – cheating, I know, but I’m five years more decrepit than I was  last time, when we visited 21 churches in 23 miles and raised over £1400 for Carlton Church: I don’t expect to do anything like as much this time.

Sponsorship is based on the number of churches visited rather than distance covered, and any sponsorship money we raise will be shared equally between the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust and St Peter's Church, Carlton  – that lovely little church in a cornfield, which has no electricity but oodles of peace:  http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1245590.

The event, also known as 'Ride & Stride', originated in Suffolk 39 years ago, and has now caught on all over the country. The Bike Ride is the main source of income for the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust, which makes grants to churches and chapels of all denominations towards repair and restoration costs - whether you are religious or not, these buildings are part of our national heritage, and deserve to be preserved.

I know that many of you are already taking part yourselves, or sponsoring family and friends, so fully understand if you have to decline. These sponsorship and raffle ticket jobs can get out of hand and embarrassing, which is why I prefer to do it online rather than face to face. However, if you would like to sponsor me, I'd be most grateful: please let me know how much per church you can pledge, and I'll get back to you afterwards to let you know how we got on, and how much you owe – or  you could just make a one-off donation here.
