Story

Welcome to my 'Haute Route for Maggie's' fundraising page.

28th April 2009:  Sadly, first time round, we did not get very far, although we did complete one exhausting, amazing day.  However, I have definitely not been put off this venture and have already started planning for a new attempt next year.  Below is the diary of events, rather briefer than hoped.

25 April 2009: Just hours into the start of the Haute Route, Paul Pellecuer our guide called off our attempt to reach Trient Hut as conditions turned difficult (100km/h winds and poor visibility). It took 9 hours to get down off the mountain having crossed 3 glaciers, climbed 873m (2,864 ft) and made a total descent of 2,752m (9,028 ft) of which a quarter was done on foot with skis and packs on our backs. An exhausting but full first day left us back at the start waiting for news of the weather.

26 April 2009: It was raining in Chamonix and the mountains were lost in the clouds and with a heavy snowfall and poor visibility conditions forecast throughout the region for the next 4 days followed by warm weather, thus a very high risk of avalanche, the attempt on the Haute Route had to be called off for this year. We have provisionally set a date for mid April next year to make a renewed attempt.

Many thanks to all who so generously sponsored me, we managed to raise over £750* for Maggies and St Mungos in less than 2 weeks and I will have to fulfill my obligation to you in 12 months time.

For anyone who didn't quite get round to it, there are now just 50 weeks to go!

Thank you all for your support.

Simon

*Update as of 16th May 2009 the total has now risen to well over £1,000! Thank you and keep it coming...

I will be updating this page again early in 2010 as the new kick off date draws closer..

I first came across Maggie's Centres when they contacted me for some furniture for the first Maggie's centre in Edinburgh and I was immediately inspired by their unique approach that helps so many people affected by cancer.  Like so many people my life had been touched by this disease (my father died when I was thirteen of malignant melanoma) and so I feel connected to the great work which this charity does.  Please visit their website to learn more:
