Story

About Wac Arts...

Our mission is to inspire young people, who face exceptional challenges and hardship, to discover their talents through the arts. Wac Arts delivers individually tailored support for young people aged 5-26, who lack safe family environments, including mentoring, training and education.  Our aim is to help young people develop life skills and build confidence - and for many of our young people we provide the family and love they desperately need.

For 35 years, Wac Arts has engaged with young people in Camden and across London to raise aspiration and broaden their horizons. We work with young people everyday reminding them that they are born to be themselves, whatever their circumstances. The way we encourage our young people is through arts, play, music, media and performance of all kinds, most notably performance that pushes each young person to best express their best self.

“Wac Arts was a gift to kids like me. It was a route out of the ghetto – it sounds like a bit of acliché but it was.”  Danny Sapani, Patron, alumnus and West-End Actor

We support over 1000 young people each year, of whom 78% are from BAME backgrounds and 19% are identified with special educational needs and disabilities.

Our programmes are either free or very low cost to our students and are available through weekend and evening programmes, holiday and respite packages, an accredited full time Diploma course and our new free school which teaches an arts curriculum to children aged 14-19 and is the first of its kind in the UK.

“Wac Arts is a lifeline, a source of hope and enablement.  We would be immeasurably poorer without the young people who have passed through their doors.”           Simon Callow- Actor and Wac Arts Patron

All children have a story to tell. Our young people not only experience joy through the arts –they go on to live independently, have successful careers and make better life choices. They are able to discover and be themselves, to rise above their circumstances and be the best that they can.  Our inclusive programmes encourage diversity and enable young people from all backgrounds to discover their potential, as demonstrated by our alumni: Courtney Pine, Zoë Rahmen, Marianne Jean Baptiste, Danny Dyer and Ms Dynamite.  We believe that the inspired child achieves more in later life and the arts provide tools to change these young people and the communities we live in.

Wac Arts felt like home very weekend”                               Ms Dynamite- Award Winning Singer andWac Arts Patron

“Our students leave with a sense of improved self-worth and confidence, which they have learnt through the discipline of high attendance rates, watching themselves improve, receiving positive reinforcement and valuing the importance of not letting others down."                           Celia Greenwood- CEO and Founder
