I have NAFLD [Non alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, now you see why we need an acronym]. It’s a progressive decay of the liver, patients with NAFLD typically have co-existing metabolic syndrome which is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
There is a strong association between NAFLD and cardiovascular disease and recent studies have confirmed that cardiovascular disease is the single most important cause of mortality in patients with NAFLD.
After a life of sporting activity, a lot of it extreme, endurance, high risk activity where the chances of death were very apparent I have managed to get to 50 years old and discovered the thing that’s going to kill me is cardiovascular disease caused by my failing liver.
There is nothing I could have done about my liver, from the moment I was born it was going to be the bit that failed first and as it fails the rest of my body gets poisoned. All I can do now I am aware of the problem is keep going as long as possible.
Staying fit is hard when you are ill, staying motivated is harder when your whole body hurts but staying active is for me, essential to staying alive.
I have always cycled; I love it, every bit of it, the bike, the riding, the social aspect, the solo efforts, the way it makes me feel and at this point in my life I have returned to it as a way to improve and maintain my fitness.
Riding the L2B and supporting the BHF is a target, a motivation, and is putting something ‘in the bank’ as I and my family am going to need the support of the BHF in years to come.
Thank you for your interest in my efforts, your support is appreciated!
